    Health4Life Cardiac Rehabilitation

    In our rehabilitation program our trained professionals work as a team to identify individual patient needs and risk factors. During monitored exercise we will counsel and educate you on healthy dietary habits, stress management and coping skills. In the end, you will have the tools needed to lead a healthier lifestyle and become confident with returning to your previous activities of daily living. 

    Below is a description of the different phases of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation that we offer:

    Inpatient program / Phase I

    If you are staying in the hospital for heart care, we will answer questions regarding your symptoms/event/procedure. We will help you identify risk factors for future events and introduce methods to modify them. Another major goal is help you identify signs and symptoms and give you instructions in the case of emergencies. Lastly, we teach you skills to manage home-activity intensity to bridge you to an outpatient rehab program in your area for continuing care.

    Outpatient Program / Phase II

    Patients attend 1-hour visits, usually 2 – 3/ week for up to 36 visits. Exercise is guided by physician prescription while feelings of exertion, heart rhythm, and vital signs are monitored by other staff. Regular education and counseling is also provided. As a reflection of our team of medical directors, exercise physiologists, nurses, dieticians and social workers; we treat the whole person in this phase.

    Maintenance Program / Phase III

    Upon graduation of phase II, patients are encouraged to continue exercise and other healthy-behaviors just as they have learned. One option is to temporarily enroll in a maintenance program using the same cardiopulmonary rehabilitation facility at Valley View Hospital. This program has an out-of-pocket cost requirement that is often cheaper than most fitness facilities, while having hospital emergency staff available. Vital sign monitoring and goal updating are done regularly, but less often than in phase II.

    If you are in the hospital recovering from a surgery, unexpected injury, or other medical treatment we are here to assist you in your recovery. At Valley View we provide expert physical, occupational and speech rehabilitation services during your stay with us. Our team is able to help you wherever you might be in the hospital; we work in the emergency department, the day surgery department, and on the acute care and critical care units of the hospital. Our goal is to help you feel confident to get back into your home environment after any illness or injury.

    Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS)

    A modified barium swallow study is a radiographic procedure that provides a direct, dynamic view of oral, pharyngeal, and upper esophageal function. It is performed in the Imaging Center at Valley View Hospital by a Radiologist and a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). Patients are provided with various consistencies of food and liquid mixed with barium, which allows the food or liquid consistency to be visualized on an x-ray before, during, and after the swallow.

    People who have difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) can benefit from this evaluation as the exact anatomical reason for the swallowing difficulty can be imaged in real time. A MBSS is not always necessary for someone who has dysphagia, but it can provide important information that will help the SLP develop a plan of care intended to enhance enjoyment during mealtimes and improve the patient’s overall sense of dignity and quality of life.

    A MBSS may be ordered for you by your physician if you have:

    – Coughing and/or choking while eating or drinking
    – Wet or gurgly vocal quality during or after eating or drinking
    – Difficulty coordinating breathing and swallowing
    – Extra effort or time needed to chew or swallow
    – Frequent respiratory infections and/or known or suspected aspiration pneumonia
    – Significant weight loss and/or dehydration due to difficulty swallowing
    – Neurologic disorders that often affect swallowing (Parkinson’s disease, Stroke, TBI, ALS, etc.)

    After the Study:
    The Speech-Language Pathologist may recommend swallowing treatments (e.g., exercises to improve muscle strength and coordination), positions/strategies to help swallow more effectively, and/or food and liquid textures that are easier and safer to swallow.

  • Valley View is proud to partner with our local high schools to provide immediate medical assistance to young athletes. With skilled and experienced trainers available onsite at schools and at sporting events, we can provide expert care when an injury—large or small—happens to our school-aged athletes. 

    Our trainers work with these student athletes to prevent injuries before and during the season, and provide pre-activity services such as taping. In addition, we use targeted injury prevention strategies individualized for each participant.
